Take photos of the component, mounting points, hoses, labels, and any visible damage. When possible, compare measurements such as cylinder length, bore, rod diameter, fitting thread, and shaft dimensions. These details help confirm fitment, especially on older equipment that may have been repaired with non-original components over the years.

Some issues can be scheduled around a slower day. Others should be addressed as soon as they appear. A cracked duckhead, worn clamp jaws, damaged safety component, loose shaft, or hydraulic or pneumatic leak affecting machine control deserves immediate attention. Continuing to use the machine may turn a manageable repair into damage to a wheel, tire, or technician.

Maintenance That Reduces Unplanned Downtime

Good maintenance is not complicated, but it must be consistent. The shop should have a simple routine based on daily checks, periodic lubrication, and scheduled inspection of wear components. The interval depends on usage. A high-volume tire shop should inspect equipment more often than a repair facility that mounts a few sets per week.

At the start of the day, check that air pressure reaches the tire changer at the required level and that the filter-regulator-lubricator system is functioning. Water in the airline is a frequent source of valve and cylinder trouble. Drain moisture traps as needed, inspect hoses for rubbing or cracking, and look for leaks around fittings and valves. A small leak may not stop work immediately, but it makes the compressor run harder and can lead to slow, inconsistent machine movement.

A fitting that does not seal properly, a valve that operates differently than the original, or a cylinder with incorrect dimensions can extend downtime and create new problems.
